Welcome to the Church of God International in Toronto. We are glad you could stop by our website and we thank you for visiting
Jesus said in the book of John chapter four and verse 24 “God requires worship in spirit and in truth.” What is true worship and how does one distinguish between true and false worship? Our Lord himself answered this question when he said in Mark 7:7-8 “They worship me in vain; their teachings are but rules taught by men.’ 8 You have let go of the commandments of God and are holding on to the traditions of men.”
Did you know it is possible to worship God in vain? Christ is here saying, irrespective of how sincere you are, even though you may be living a good moral upright life, even though you are attending church regularly, if your worship is not in accordance with God’s commands it is in vain.
What are these commands for true worship? Is there a tradition of worship laid down by God in the Bible? In 2Thess 2:15 the Apostle Paul says to the Church “Hold the Traditions that you have learned, whether by word or by letter of ours”.
The scriptures reveal that God has set aside and made holy, special practices and days of worship that man must observe to worship him. These practices and days of worship commemorate important events in God’s plan of salvation in Christ. The redemptive work of Christ is at the centre of these observances, and to ignore them is to ignore the very Gospel message Jesus brought to save the world. God has laid down a worship system in the Bible which men have abandoned for their own traditions of worldly festivals like Christmas, Easter, Good Friday, Lent, and Sunday as their weekly day of worship!
To worship God in truth one must worship him according to the written instructions he gives in His Word because God’s word defines truth. Jesus declares in John 17:17 “Thy Word is truth”. Worship that does not conform to the word of God is false.
But in addition to truth God requires worship in Spirit How do we worship God in Spirit? We do this by having His Spirit in us so that our utterances to God are directed by His Spirit. It is by the Spirit of God that one cries out to God. Rom 8:15-1715 says “For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” But to whom does God give His Spirit? The answer is in your Bible. Acts 5:32 says “God gives His Spirit to them that obey Him” Obeying God’s commands are a condition for receiving His Spirit. The Bible says “without the Spirit of God we are none of His”.
